Raleigh International:

Raleigh International is a youth development charity which inspires
people from all backgrounds and nationalities to discover their
full potential by working together on challenging environmental
and community projects around the world. We run 3-month expeditions
that are part of a longer programme of training weekends and workshops
prior to expedition. The training concentrates on personal development,
cultural awareness, global issues and preparing people for expedition
life.
Raleigh International: Malaysia 4 Week Charity
Project Summary- November 2004.
"I decided to take some time out from my career because I
wanted to be part of a team effort and achieve a task which would
leave a worthwhile mark on the community. I was keen to go to Malaysia
and also do a variety of projects over a period of time to see
the results so Raleigh International suited me perfectly.
What did you hope to gain from the experience?
I expected hard physical work and also expected meeting 14 strangers
every 3 weeks to be emotionally challenging but fun! I also hoped
to gain a sense of achievement though the worthwhile projects.
I've become more socially, environmentally and globally aware.
Has the programme been different to your
expectations?
No, as expected. It has been tough but very rewarding. Trekking
was the hardest thing physically, but also the most rewarding.
What have been your most enjoyable moments?
Reaching the top of Mount K, helping the children in the local
community with their language skills, sitting around the campfire,
laughing until you are about to cry.
What has been the biggest challenge you
have faced and how did you overcome it?
The 12 day trek and climbing Mount Kinabalu. I overcome any fears
through the team effort - everyone is feeling the same and individual
members give you all the support you need. They have faith in you.
What memories will you take away with you?
A tremendous sense of achievement in climbing Mount Kinabalu and
seeing the little boy who didn't say anything at all during the
first English class and then answering all the questions by the
end of the third week. And passing my PADI Advanced scuba diving
course.
How have you found the mix of people on
projects?
It's been a good mix of people, added to the group dynamics and
it changes your perception of people.
What skills have you gained (both personal
and practical)?
Too many practical skills to mention… sawing, drilling,
chiselling… Personally I have learnt to take a step back
and trust other people. Previously I have always taken on the role
of leader and now I am able to trust others to make a decision.
What effect will the programme have on your
life/future career path?
When I am back in London I will remember Batu Puteh and how simple
life is in the kampong. It will definitely help me to put my life
into perspective and remember what is really important
Would you recommend it to others?
I would love to do it again as a project manager and would definitely
recommend it. It is an amazing experience which would challenge
you mentally and physically but is rewarding. No matter what
your background or personality you would benefit greatly from
expedition
"Being away from home with Raleigh has helped me realize
what's important in life: settling for nothing or achieving everything." Louise
